Introducing the specialist group for Sempervivum and Jovibarba

The specialized succulent group “Sempervivum and Jovibarba“, is a part of the “German Perennial Society” (Deutsche Gesellschaft der Staudenfreunde”).  The group has not been “always living“, but is still a baby which was born on May 1st, 1999.

Over the course of the last few years a great change has taken place. On the one hand, the number of large collections of Sempervivum in garden specialty businesses has decreased, and on the other hand, the collections of private cultivators have increased greatly.

Through the continuing boom of new variations in Sempervivum, especially in Belgium, England, the USA and Holland, there are to date about 3500 named hybrids.

This is where the new and exciting work of our group begins. One of our long term goals is the uniformed notation and naming of the many hybrids, which with help of Horst Diehm’s “Diehmor” (a catalogue of Sempervivum) we have come a lot closer to.

This is a necessary prerequisite for the exchange and the classification of hybrids. Another of our group’s goals is to establish contact with other Sempervivum enthusiasts.

One thing is sure: it’s likely to become an addiction! Private collections of more than 400 varieties are no longer a rarity.

This should, however, not be a standard for beginners. On the contrary, beginners should start out slowly, getting to know the plants with their disadvantages as well as their many possible advantages, and than slowly increase the number of plants in their collection.

To become a member of our group, simply join the GdS (German Perennial Society).  From there you can become a new member of our group, “Sempervivum and Jovibarba”. The membership includes:

- An actual list of our members in Germany

- The, to date, only issue of specialists journal “Semperrunde“ (in German)

- A companion guide „ All there is to know about Sempervivum“. Excerpts from
the GdS’s “Ratgeber fĂĽr Staudenvielfalt”(also in German)

You can find a membership list of the GdS at the following web site:  http://www.sempervivum.info/html/uber_uns.html
